Historic Landmark

The current location of Church and Tree sits on land developed in 1806 in what was the town of Nelson. In that time, the he small town contained 68 houses and a population of 476 inhabitants. By the time this building was finished in 1867 (the year of Canadian confederation) the village was on record to be established with an attorney, a cabinet maker, one single physician, a tailor and shoemaker, an innkeeper, a coroner, three saddlers and a variety of farm hands.

By the 1870’s the population in the township had increased to include a hall, brick school, two other churches, one hotel, and two saw mills. The congregation of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church was established in 1822 congregating in a wooden barn just West of the current brick building. In 1867, the congregation led by then minister William King, secured a $3,500 loan to help build the building you see today!

Fast forward to 2017, your Host William Murray began the process of acquiring the building from the new St. Paul’s Presbyterian church. We are so excited to share this unique space with our amazing guests, and look forward to making your every DIY wedding wish come to life!
